Demystifying umbrella insurance: why it exists and who should have it

An open umbrella in the rain

Insurance is a topic that often brings confusion, and umbrella insurance most of all. If you are not familiar with this type of coverage, you are not alone. But understanding it is worth ten minutes, because it protects against exactly the kind of event nobody budgets for.

What umbrella insurance is

Umbrella insurance, also known as excess liability insurance, provides an additional layer of protection beyond the limits of your existing policies. Your auto or home policy covers you up to a limit; umbrella coverage begins where those limits end, in the event of a lawsuit or a large claim.

Why it is worth considering

  1. Enhanced liability coverage: if you are found liable for damages beyond your primary policy limits, the umbrella steps in, shielding your savings and assets.
  2. Protection against lawsuits: legal expenses and settlements can exceed ordinary coverage quickly.
  3. Coverage for events primary policies may not include.
  4. Affordability: for the protection provided, umbrella coverage is often surprisingly inexpensive.

Editor’s note: our practice today focuses on life insurance, guaranteed income, and coordinated planning. This piece stays up from our original blog because the question still deserves a plain answer, and because peace of mind has always been the point.
