The importance of landlord insurance: protecting a rental property investment

Being a landlord comes with its own set of challenges, from finding reliable tenants to maintaining the property. One aspect that should never be overlooked is insurance, and specifically landlord insurance, because a standard homeowners policy is built for owner occupied homes, not rentals.

What landlord insurance covers

  1. Property protection: structural damage from fire, vandalism, and covered disasters.
  2. Liability coverage: claims and lawsuits for injuries or damage occurring on the rental property.
  3. Loss of rental income: reimbursement for lost rent while a covered loss is being repaired.
  4. Tenant related risks: options covering rent defaults and damage beyond normal wear.

For property owners, the point is the same as with any good coverage: financial security in an unpredictable market, and one less thing keeping you up at night.

Editor’s note: our practice today focuses on life insurance, guaranteed income, and coordinated planning. This piece stays up from our original blog for the landlords among our readers, with our compliments.
